2027 Kia Sportage: Gas, Hybrid or Plug-in?
The 2027 Kia Sportage comes three ways: a gas model, a hybrid you never plug in, and a plug-in hybrid with Kia-estimated electric range for short trips. That is a real decision for High Desert drivers, whether your week is a commute down the hill from Victorville, errands around Hesperia and Apple Valley, or weekend drives on dirt roads. This guide compares all three using Kia’s published numbers.

What are the three 2027 Sportage powertrains?
All three share the same compact SUV body. What changes is how much of the driving the electric motor does. Here is the short version.
| What to compare | Sportage (gas) | Sportage Hybrid | Sportage Plug-in Hybrid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine | 2.5L four-cylinder | 1.6L turbo with electric motor | 1.6L turbo with electric motor and larger battery |
| Power | See Kia’s spec sheet for your trim | 232 hp, 271 lb-ft combined | 268 hp |
| Drive | FWD or AWD, depending on trim | FWD or AWD, depending on trim | AWD |
| Fuel economy | See fueleconomy.gov for your trim | EPA-estimated 41 mpg combined on FWD trims, 35 combined on AWD trims | Kia-estimated 34 miles of electric range |
| Do you plug it in? | No | No | Yes, to use the electric range |
| Off-road trim | X-Pro available | No X-Pro | No X-Pro |
Hybrid fuel economy is EPA-estimated and varies by trim and drive type. The Plug-in Hybrid’s electric range is a preliminary Kia estimate, not an EPA figure.
Is the Sportage Hybrid worth it for a High Desert commute?
For long drives, the hybrid’s appeal is simple: fewer gallons for the same miles. Here is how much fuel the hybrid uses over a year of commuting, based on Kia’s EPA estimates and 250 workdays. Multiply the gallons by today’s pump price to see what it means for your budget.
| Your commute | Miles per year | Hybrid FWD (41 mpg) | Hybrid AWD (35 mpg) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Victorville to San Bernardino or Ontario, about 80 miles round trip | 20,000 | About 488 gallons | About 571 gallons |
| Victorville to Riverside, about 107 miles round trip | 26,750 | About 652 gallons | About 764 gallons |
Gallons per year = miles per year divided by mpg. Based on EPA estimates. Actual mileage will vary with options, driving conditions, driving habits and your vehicle’s condition.
One takeaway from the table: choosing AWD over FWD on the hybrid adds roughly 80 to 110 gallons a year on these commutes. If you rarely drive in snow or on loose dirt, that is worth thinking about before you pick a drive type.
Which Sportage works for dirt roads and weekend trips?
Kia Media lists ground clearance of 8.3 inches on the Sportage Hybrid S, EX, X-Line and SX Prestige trims, and 7.1 inches on the LX. AWD models include Terrain Mode for snow, mud and sand, according to Kia. If desert trails are a big part of your weekends, the X-Pro is built around the gas engine, so that is the one to look at.
Kia Media publishes cargo numbers for the hybrid: 34.5 to 39.5 cubic feet behind the second row depending on the floor position, and 65.4 to 73.7 cubic feet behind the first row.
Towing is not listed on Kia’s hybrid or plug-in pages, so if you plan to tow anything, ask us before you choose a powertrain. We will check the owner’s manual for the exact model you are considering.
Does the Sportage Plug-in Hybrid make sense in Victorville?
It can, if your daily driving is short and you can plug in at home. Kia estimates 34 miles of electric range, so a day of errands around Victorville, Hesperia or Apple Valley could run mostly on electricity. Longer trips, like the commutes in the table above, would use the gas engine for the rest, the same way the hybrid does.
The plug-in comes with AWD standard and is offered on the X-Line trims. Kia’s page does not list charging times, so ask us what to expect with a standard home outlet before you decide. Think about where you would plug in: a garage or driveway outlet makes this much easier than street parking.
Which 2027 Sportage is right for you?
The hybrid makes sense if:
- You commute long distances and want fewer fuel stops
- You do not want to deal with plugging in
- You mostly stay on pavement, so FWD is enough
The plug-in makes sense if:
- Most of your days are short trips under about 34 miles
- You have a place to plug in at home
- You want AWD as standard
The gas model makes sense if:
- You want the X-Pro for dirt roads and light off-roading
- You want the widest choice of trims and drive types
- You do not want a hybrid system or a plug
The best way to settle it is to drive them back to back on roads you know. We can set that up at our Victorville showroom.
